This work was learned across 20+ years in professional theater. A director doesn't get perfect conditions. The people didn't choose one another. The budget is finite. Opinions are strong. Problems arrive late. And opening night does not move. The work is to get the room from stuck to ready anyway.
One example. On a production of The Full Monty, the material involved full nudity, body-shaming language, and comedy from a different cultural moment. Most organizations would make a thing like that safer by making it smaller. We did the opposite: named the hard things early, out loud, in a structured room, so they cost a conversation instead of the production. The show stayed bold and it stayed funny.
